“Bloody hell, Much... what are you doing?”

When he saw Much heading toward him with a chicken in his arms, John mumbled a quiet curse. For some inexplicable reason, animals were drawn to Much. While he and John were handing out money to the needy, they were accosted by a small black kitten. The kitten's tiny claws clung to the bottom of Much's breeches until the milliner's son had to notice him. After giving the kitten a cuddle, they continued their mission—until a lamb headbutted Much's legs in a desperate attempt to get attention. Much snuggled the lamb, said goodbye, and they went back to distributing Robin's bags of coin.

Now they were delayed yet again. As Much nuzzled his cheek against the chicken's feathers, the hen cocked her head. She appeared to be returning Much's affection. John was baffled.

“Why do animals love you so much?” John asked.

“I don't know. It's always been like this. Once, my neighbor's dog dove from a second story window because he wanted to stay at my side.”

John's eyebrows were raised by Much's story. “Really?”

“Aye. And one time, when I was leaving my aunt's farm, one of her horses jumped a fence and tried to drag me back to the stables.”

Little John snatched the chicken from Much's arms and gave her a light push in the direction of her coop. When the hen tried to return to her idol, John frightened her away with a growl. “These animals must see something in you. I wish I could see it,” John said. “To me, you're a bloody nuisance.”

Much kicked a pebble in the road, dipped his hands in his pockets, and muttered a soft, “I'm sorry, John...”

“Let's just get this over with,” John grouched as he counted the remaining bags of money. He had six, which meant he was only halfway finished with his task. As he scanned his surroundings, he felt a bit discouraged. If the villagers' modish attire was any indication, they had somehow wandered into a more affluent part of town.

“These people look rich.” Much's observation echoed John's thoughts.

“Aye. You're right, Much. Where do you think we should go?”

Much didn't answer John's question. His attention drifted elsewhere. “If these people are rich... do you think they'd want to buy some hats?”

“Focus, Much!” John lectured his younger companion. “Now's not the time to think about your stupid hats!”

Much's lips dropped into a frown. “My hats aren't stupid! My hats are stylish! Actually...” Much's hand sank into his overstuffed satchel. “I made a hat for you, John... but I'm afraid you'd make fun of it, so I haven't given it to you yet.”

When John tried to peek into Much's satchel, the young milliner held it behind his back. “Hand it over!” John begged him. “Let me see your latest work of art!”

“You promise you won't laugh at it?”

“I promise.”

As soon as Much presented the hat, John's promise was tested. His chuckles were barely suppressed. Much's creation was a cone-shaped straw hat with an excessively wide brim. It was obnoxiously sized, but it might have been tolerable if it wasn't smothered in black feathers.
